Here’s what happens when you jump feet first and arms flailing off of a thirty-foot cliff into the Pacific Ocean. The fall is so thrilling that you have to scream on the way down. The slap of the water against your feet stings momentarily and then cold, salty water shoots straight up your nose. It’s dark beneath the surface because your eyes are closed, quiet except for the rush of water filling the temporary vacuum formed by your body, cold except for the warm pocket of air that the sea makes for you. It takes longer to get back to the surface than you think it will and there’s a moment of feeling as if you’re on another planet or nowhere at all. You surface and water drains from your nose and eyes and you’re just another small creature in the big, wide world.
